Un faible degré d’originalité, Antoine Defoort
7 p.m > 8:15 p.m
If, like the Biennial team, you liked the show Germinal by Antoine Defoort and Halory Goerger (presented at Avignon in 2013, and highly successful subsequently), you will love this conference-in-progress on copyright by and with Antoine Defoort.
“A 300-year-old institution set up to stimulate artistic creation, copyright is now fragmenting today under the weight of the walls and watchtowers erected by rights holders (who are de facto the first to benefit from it), and is falling apart under the clicks of a hoard of counterfeiters operating calmly from their sofas. ‘Un faible degré d’originalité’ (‘A small degree of originality’) is not only a conference but also a show. Seventy-five minutes spent looking back over the incredible history of copyright from the 15th century to the present day. Denis Diderot will appear in person to explain the context of the Age of Enlightenment; we will hear the incredible saga of Maurice Ravel’s estate, and we will study the concept of the ‘rivalry of resources’ by distributing Pépitos.
This is a show: there will be jokes and sleight of hand to make the subject digestible, and dramatic stratagems whose simplicity/efficiency ratio has been carefully tested. We will make a model of copyright with cardboard boxes; there will be a short animated cartoon adapted to A3 paper, and we will sing a song to shed light on what is truly terrible in the story of Les Parapluies de Cherbourg… ”
