The group exhibition Dopamine probes the hidden side of technologies. It navigates through utopian visions and real-life addiction, to dream of a more humane digital future in an era of algorithmic manipulation and information silos.

Utopian thinking led to the creation of digital platforms, which were initially designed to create a more open, participatory, decentralized world. Back in the early days, the time of the “global village” and collective intelligence, technology was expected to provide us with a path to freedom and societal transformation.

In California, inspired by the counterculture of the 1960s and 70s, founders and early adopters viewed social media as spaces for questioning the powers that be. They also saw a means to promote a diversity of thought and to support innovation outside conventional settings. Through this prism, several artists are now asking how we can rebuild a common vision and a different digital future – one that is more ethical, inclusive and humane.
