The PHANTASMATA exhibition lies somewhere between dream and reality, leading to a loss of bearings. Presented at Galerie Charlot, Éric Vernhes’s works feature phantoms, mental images and strange tales – echoes of our imagination in motion.

The term phantasmata, of Greek origin, refers to what is familiar yet appears in an unfamiliar form. In his installations—combining sound, images, and text—Eric Vernhes brings these unsettling apparitions to life. The Phantasmata represent all the conceivable differences between the known and the unknown, the mobile and the immobile, the familiar and the foreign.

In this exhibition, Vernhes summons a fictional artist created during lockdown, as well as writer Paul Bowles, philosopher Gaston Bachelard, and even artificial intelligence, to explore this theme through a variety of visual, sound-based, analog, and digital media.

Eric Vernhes presents the work Meeting Philip as part of the exhibition Les illusions retrouvées at CENTQUATRE-PARIS, from October 11, 2025, to January 11, 2026.
