What remains of images in a humanless world, without anyone to look at them? The Afterimage, a reflective exhibition by Hugo Deverchère, explores the disappearance, illusion and uncertain future of memory.
A residency in the Atacama Desert led Deverchère to probe the connections between ancient designs and modern mining infrastructure. The artist underscores the fragility of digital memory on the scale of geological time, and imagines new archival media beyond the scope of humanity, which combine rock, DNA and astrophysics.
Presented as a narrative set in the future, the exhibition reflects on the fate of images in a post-human world. Deverchère reconstructs a fossilized and digital memory of the world, assembling artefacts, signals and optical illusions. The Afterimage is a poetic journey into an uncertain future, a continually evolving human, geological and cosmic landscape.
